What is the gold price per gram today?

Spot is quoted for pure metal, so it is the price of 24 carat gold or fine silver. Jewellery alloys contain less than that, and you pay a fabrication charge on top for sheet, wire or casting grain. Both are shown in the table above.

How alloy prices are worked out

Take the spot price per gram, multiply by the fineness of the alloy, then add the supplier's fabrication charge. 18ct gold is 750 parts per thousand, so its metal value is three quarters of the spot price before any charge is added.

alloy price /g = spot /g × fineness × (1 + fabrication)

The fabrication charge is a small proportion on gold and a large one on silver, because silver metal is cheap relative to the work of rolling and drawing it. That is why sterling sheet can cost half as much again as its metal value while 22ct grain sits close to spot.

Where these prices come from

Metal prices come from the COMEX and NYMEX futures markets, published by Yahoo Finance. They are the front-month contracts, which sit a little above spot because of carry, so a dealer's quote will read slightly under the figure here. They are converted to your currency using the European Central Bank's daily reference rate; the dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725, so it is derived rather than quoted.

These are market reference prices, not a dealing quote. We do not buy or sell metal and we take no commission on anything shown here. Your own supplier's rate is what you should quote from, and it will sit above spot because of the fabrication charge.

Troy ounces and grams

Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams, not the 28.35 grams of an ordinary ounce. To convert a spot price to grams, divide by 31.1035.

Common questions

How much is 1 gram of 9ct gold worth?

9 carat gold is 375 parts per thousand, so its metal value is a little over a third of the pure gold price per gram. What you pay your supplier is higher again, because the fabrication charge is proportionally largest on low carat alloys.

Why is the price I pay higher than spot?

Spot is the price of pure metal traded in bulk. Your supplier has to alloy it, roll or draw it to size, hold stock and make a margin, so the price of sheet or wire always sits above the metal value.

How often do these prices update?

Twice each weekday, at about 10:35 and 15:05 UTC. Metal markets close at weekends, so on a Saturday or Sunday you are seeing Friday's close. The exact time of the figures on screen is shown next to them.

What is a troy ounce in grams?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. It is heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 grams, and it is the standard unit for quoting gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

Is scrap gold paid at this rate?

No. A refiner pays a percentage of the metal value, typically somewhere between 80 and 95 per cent depending on quantity and how clean the material is, and there is usually an assay or handling charge.
